Happy Angel After

I'm driving faster than my angel can fly

Think I ditched him at that last truck stop

While he was getting high.

He said, 'Come on, man pull over, 

I just need a little hit.'

I said, 'Those wings are bad enough, man

we're not driving while you're lit!'

He crashed down on my kitchen table

One night like lighting from above.

Was a big deal back upstairs, I hear

Then push had come to shove,

And I guess that is just what comes

When you put pride before The Throne.

Now like us all, he's got his demons,

But he seems so all alone.

Now he sits on my couch all day

Watching sports, election ads, and clips.

He sighs and says, 'Why change

your Horseman mid-Apocalypse?'

See the politics attracts him

More than you'd think it would.

Says Pete's the better speaker 

But admits Joe's ideas are good. 

And he'll chuck a beer can at the TV,

Yell, "It's never like They said!

First They promise you dominion,

then They trod upon your head!

And He's already drafted Abel, 

so you cast your Lot with Cain, 

but it's always those inside the ark

say 'Never mind the rain.'"

Now he sits on my couch all day

Watching reruns of Riki Lake. 

He yells, "Have you got any more Fig Newton cookies?"

I say,  "Cookies? It's fruit and cake!"

And I sit down right beside him, 

Shove a wing out of my face, 

Yell, "Of all the angels runnin' round

why are YOU here on my case?"

He just grunts and rips a fart and says,

"You got a lotta nerve."

Maybe it's true: we all just get

The angels we deserve. 

I was hoping for a Michael,

Or at least a Gabriel.

Someone up in Heaven's jobs program

Just said, "Aw what the Hell?"
